Tree Monster - lighting tests

No animation here, just me trying out some camera angles and lighting with the sculpt...I like what I see, can't wait to paint him up....started playing with color in the last bits here, but I think I'll go for more of a red-clay-brown-earthy scheme for the final puppet...I haven't even thought about what kind of set I want for this guys tests, probably layered painted backdrops, sort of 2 1/2-D :) but right now I'm focused on foam latex...tomorrow I remove the hair stems, untie him, finish up the underneath area, and Thursday I mold....looks like next week is foamy, fingers crossed....
**the music here is a segment of the I,Robot score by Marco Beltrami, whose Hellboy score is one of my favorites**

Looks good in dramatic lighting. Hey, you gonna make 'sockets' for teeth before making the mold?

I worried about sockets being too deep, making undercuts, so instead I dug out a small trench and plan to make the teeth sort of flat, like shards of glass.....splinters...I may end up having to use replacement mouths if I don't like the way it animates....

...also, gonna build up a 'gum' area between teeth with rubber latex.....

I like the gnarl of bark on woody's shoulder -- very "tribal tattoo."

...I wonder if you could use the light-rising effect in the actual film. Watching the shadows move is fascinating. Perhaps a "time passes" shot... Between the kill of the first victim and the next morning.

(There ARE going to be victims... Right? Right?!)

Love the clip...as a complete work unto itself. It's kind of creepy how this creature is just there and the lights are moving and the camera/viewer is observing. If woody would move even slightly (breathing or eye movement) it would probably be even creepier...to me anyway. Kind of like coming across some beast in the forest at night and knowing it could chomp you in two but is just keeping still...watching you.

Sven...who are you talkin' to here?! of course there are going to be victims.....many many victims.....an entire team of burly lumberjacks in fact....there'll be little armatured men for running and little clay men (stunt men :) for killing in various ways....2 to 3" tall approximate...lots of animating in the sequence, most I've tried to tackle....I picture the 'Watcher in the Water' scene in the Fellowship of the Ring movie.....bursting forth, vines reaching out, taking no prisoners :)

And Grant, that is EXACTLY the mood I want for the first appearance, like he's been there all along unnoticed & watching, but as soon as someone takes an axe to a tree he goes berserk...

Love it. I liked how the mouth changed shape as the shadows passed over it. Monsterously good lighting.

Hmmmm.... veeery interesting. So, he's like the Lorax's badass big brother! Maybe what the Lorax evolved into after going into a cocoon......
