Only Skin Deep - Wrought Iron

I thought 'SMS EC' might be a little confusing so here we have the official title, "Only Skin Deep". Ive got three sets: swamp (the backdrop), bedroom, and cafe patio. Today i got to work on the cafe patio wrought iron. I started by building an 'F' shape out of pieces of scrap plexiglass from work, hot glued together. Then I traced the 'F' and drew out a few designs, laid down some wax paper, and traced out my choice design with liquid sculpey.....baked it in pieces, peeled it off the wax paper, painted it, and then hotglued it to the plexi.....in the pic, the whole piece is clamped to a wire rack, off set.....
The little table has a disk of plastic underneath the top....i need all the extra support b/c of the flimsy floppiness of the baked liquid sculpey....the sculpey top is glued to the plastic, which is screwed into the top of the wooden dowel, which has a tie down in the bottom......chairs coming soon.....there isnt much more to this set, there will be a few costumed puppets hanging out on the other side of the railing, and then a greenscreen which will be replaced with mardi gras float footage, if I can make it work (the footage is a little shaky, handheld).....

SMS EC Swampy Backdrop

Ive started a backdrop for a scene in the short. Acrylic on 2 x 2 plywood. It might be digitally enhanced, possibly with a real moon and fog.....

SMS EC A Textured Wall

Yesterday I took a piece of foam board, cut out my windows, cut shallow gouges into one side, and spackled it. After 10 minutes or so, once the spackle started to dry a bit, I whacked at it with a paintbrush to texture the wall, making small peaks, some of which were too peaky and had to be squashed after it dried a little more. After Katrina I sheetrock/textured my parents' house, so this was easy. Ive got two washes on the wall so far, the first an iridescent copper (pic 1), the second a crimson (pic 2)....
I also made my cafe tabletop out of liquid sculpey.....made my mirror too, and started on the two armatures for Suzanne and Herbie, my characters....

SMS EC The Bed

Aprolympics continues with SMS = Stop Mo Shorts, see the link in my sidebar if you are unfamiliar.....the keywords for June 2007 are chamber, dark, and passion. EC = An Entertaining Comic, a publisher in the 50s which produced controversial classics like Tales From the Crypt, Crime Suspenstories, Vault of Horror...last week a tale came to mind which fit the SMS keywords, and was one of my favorite EC stories as a teen, so I dug it out, discovered it takes place in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and decided to put Jenny on temporary hold while I make this film. It will be my darkest yet, with a touch of gore. Sets will be fairly minimal, a one-wall bedroom set with bed/window/lamp/mirror, a swampy painted backdrop, and a cafe. My plan for the cafe-- create a table and two chairs, a column and eave, as if the table is on the edge of a patio....behind that, a couple of puppets in costume hanging out....behind them a greenscreen, to be replaced with actual Mardi Gras float footage, which was taken at night so all figures are silhouettes against the brightness of the lit up floats, so it should work out well....The cast features two puppets, man and woman....Im thinking of going foam latex on them, similar to Nick H's Adam and Eve pups, as they will need to show some skin in the final frames....Over the last two days Ive been building the bed....headboard drawn with liquid sculpey on a piece of wax paper, then baked for about 15 mins at 275...matress is a foam covered piece of wood, then covered in a cut up shirt sleeve, an old cotton dress shirt....I cut out a piece of shirt with seam, so I could use the shirts seam for the sheets seam....posts and rails are wooden, there will be curtains on the two remaining sides....

Focus......Focus.....

I'm starting to itch.

June SMS is singing its sweet sirens song in my head and I tire of the Jenny focus. It started setting in around Bacchus, and I thought the distraction of making that puppet would be enough, scratch the itch and get back to Jenny...
See, I'm trying to push myself, to get a JG teaser trailer done for this July, for the October Lovecraft Film Fest....but with recent additions to the story, involving two new, large sets, i could realistically be making Jenny for another 3 years or longer....so is it too early for a trailer? The thing is, the more I push myself to stay focused on Jenny, the faster I get bored, unmotivated. And now I have an idea for the June StopMoShorts Haiku (although it may be too grotesque for SMS' standards) and I feel the need to shift over to that....actually spend the two 1/2 months working on it, instead of pounding a short out in the last two weeks...
But I look at my overall Jenny progress and its a little discouraging. I have a test Nola (who Im thinking about sculpting and casting in foam). I have a 90% complete Jenny sculpt. Still need sto be cast, painted, and armatured. I have a piece of unfinished pier (1 of 3). I have some of the background set done (trees and Bait Shop). I feel like there should be more, considering its been almost a year and a half.
Im not sure why the sense of urgency with the Jenny film, why i feel so stressed about it....

Jenny Foot Jenny Butt And A Bit o'Belly

I added a littl more detail to the abdomen/belly.....

.....I'm still not thrilled with the booty design, gonna try something else i think....still swirly but different.....a normal person would work this all out on paper first, but hey....what can I say except, I think with my hands :)

....loving this foot shape, took me a while to find something that worked but I think this'll be swell....more detail coming soon....

We interrupt this program....

This morning I woke to find my computer monitor dead. So Ive had to relocate the setup into the living room, to use my Tv as a monitor. Text is blurry and hard to read so I won't be blogging too much....I'll keep posting pics of progress, but they ay not be best quality, as I can't really tell :(
I made some progress on my Jenny sculpt over the weekend. Will try topostpics later....

Aprolympics: Day 5

Today I did a little sketch...

"...she is yanked to the missing board, wedged there like a clog in a drain, her neck bearing the weight of the monster and the sea, Jenny and the scarf like the pendulum of an underwater grandfather clock..."
Tomorrow should be a sculpting day.....

Aprolympics: Day 4

Production marathon continues....today I played with the back of Jenny's neck and the shape of the backs of her legs, and started to define the feet a little more....I want them to look like a fish tail when they're together, but at the same time, I dont want to give her big elf shoes...

Aprolympics Day 3

Aprolympics is officially go, today I painted up a second pier board...didnt spend as much time weathering this one and it shows (the one on the right)....I'm going to try Mefull's suggestion, experiment with some drill bits to speed it up a bit....I'd love to be able to weather the whole piece in one sitting, carving by hand is exhausting and too time consuming.....we'll see...

I also worked on Jenny's hand a bit, shaped it some and added a little emaciated vestige of a thumb....I've decided to make the webbing from fabric of some kind, attached after foaming...

Gold Leaf

Oh nooooooooooooo!

Today I applied gold leaf to the mask, for a while there he looked tar'd n feather'd....but after I took a toothbrush to him, he turned out nice.....I'm very happy with the end result, he managed to hold onto most of his detail.

Happy Aprils Fools Day everybody, and let the production marathon begin.....I'm gonna work on Bacchus for another day or two, then its onto something Jenny...

Bacchus - Comedy Mask

Bacchus is also affiliated with the theatre, and my design incorporates the masks of comedy and tragedy. Today I made the comedy mask, it'll be gold-leafed but for now its just purple sculpey with some black paint in the crevices. I wanted a sort of Green Man look too, and am happy with the result. His mouth is open and accessible, should a person want to feed a vine secretly through the back of his head, and out his mouth......
